It happened days before the planned canonization of Pope John Paul XXIII and the crucifix had been dedicated to him. The boy that died was only 21 years old, and the Telegraph report that he was living in a street named after Pope John XXIII. In a town called Lovere in Via Papa Giovanni.
His name was Marco Gusmini, and he was posing for a photograph with a group of friends in front of the 100ft cross when it suddenly collapsed.

Sadly, the Spanish Teacher, Ann Maguire as passed over due to what a student did. Makes one wonder whether the 15 year old child was on any medication for such an action to take place. This hasn't happened in the UK, since 1995, and the UK was still trying to get out the recession.
