Why the ban?

The use of antibiotics in intensive farming has recently led to a ban on meat imports from the United States into Russia over concerns about the growth stimulant called ractopamine. It’s widely fed to pigs and cattle in the US.

The Animal Legal Defence Fund has applauded Russia’s ban on US beef and pork.
A recent research study by Consumer Reports found that one in five American pork products out of almost 250 samples tested positive for ractopamine as well as several strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
