France Fire Crash, Fire Flower, Gascoigne

On the 14th of April, the LORD mentioned 'Gascoigne', the word links us back to the Normans  and 1066. The area in France was known for its wine, Gascony. 'Bamber Gascoigne, was a character mentioned in Charles Lamb's 'Essays of Elia' in the essay on Christ's hospital.' Modern day, there is a Bamber Gascoigne, a British author and broadcaster in addition to an ex-English footballer that is known as Gazza.

The name is associated with the French rebellion and Gascony is also the region and land of d'Artagnan a famous musketeer. It is a story of 'espionage' and there was a film made called 'The Final Duel'. The days when men fought one-to-one with the sword. Michael York was d'Artagnan in that film, and historically, the Gascoigne family lived in stately homes in Yorkshire.

There is a district attorney in San Franscisco with the name of George Gascon.

I was compelled to paint this picture for a Muslim man as a gift, because he had admired one of the paintings that I had given for an RIP. It now looks like it was prophetic like many others that I am compelled to paint.

FIRE FLOWER

On the 15th of April, Nostradamus and his cookies.

“There are no traditional recipes for cookies in Provence,” Anne observes, explaining that until the end of World War II, baking in Provence was done mostly with olive oil. “All the pastries were crisp. It’s butter that gives the smoothness.” Anne and Hermann sought the best ways to use Provencal ingredients: candied fruits, dried raisins, figs, apricots, almond paste, almond milk, almonds grilled and toasted, almonds in pieces and in powder. Since Saint-Rémy is the birthplace of Nostradamus, whose writings on sugar are among the earliest known, the couple turned to alchemists for inspiration. “We had to go to other alchemists to understand what Nostradamus was talking about,” says Anne. “Do you know many librarians are also gourmands? They found recipes for us and were our first tasters.” A saffron cookie comes from the first alchemy book ever published. Then there’s a Roman cookie made of olive oil, almonds, walnuts, cumin, pepper, red wine, eggs, honey and wheat flour.'

The people of Agen by those of Périgord
Will be vexed, holding as far as the Rhône:
The union of Gascons and Bigorre
To betray the temple, the priest giving his sermon.

COACH CRASH FRANCE

Today's newspaper headlines a fire in France. A British 'coach crash inferno' in the French Alps. Most of the people had a miraculous escape after the coach crashed into the mountains. The coach was full of British staff coming back from the winter skiing season. The 64 year old driver died, four are seriously injured in hospital, and 22 have minor injuries. It is written that there was a red luggage trailer with the logo, 'Classic, - proud of our quality', it was charred but did not catch fire. [2]

The coach company is owned by a company in County Durham, in Yorkshire. So there is our link with Gascoigne.

Today is also the funeral of Maggie Thatcher, St. Paul's Cathedral and I do have a painting that can go with that.
